Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To evaluate the swallowing objectively, we have investigated the surface electromyogram (EMG) as a non-invasive examination. However, it is necessary to shorten examination time for reduction of patient's expenses, especially in the clinical examination. Therefore, we compared surface EMGs recorded by active electrodes or conventional electrodes (an Ag/AgCl disposable electrode pasted on a disc electrode) in swallowing. As results, all analysis parameters (delay time, duration time, muscle activity, mean muscle activity, number of bursts, peak frequency, mean power frequency and median frequency) calculated from surface EMGs derived from geniohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles shown no significant difference between active electrodes and conventional electrodes. Hence, it is suggested that we can use the active electrode for surface EMGs to evaluate swallowing as same as the conventional electrode. In addition, because the wearing time for the active electrode was shortened significantly, the usefulness of the active electrode is also suggested.
