Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A decade has passed since the concept of Smart Dust presented at MobiCom 1999. At that time, the main stream of the study for wireless sensor networks was about MAC protocols and routing protocols based on the concept of Smart Dust, and the protocols were evaluated with simulation. However, emergence of TinyOS and MICA mote has changed the situation. The researchers have started to focus on the deployment of real applications such as tracking applications, structural health monitoring, counter sniper, and volcano monitoring. This paper calls the deployment enforcing approach as "application-oriented approach". The application-oriented approach not only expanded the application area of wireless sensor networks but also created new technologies such as time synchronization protocol for mobile ad-hoc networks and signal processing for effectively gather valuable sensor data. This paper discusses about current trend and challenges for wireless sensor networks.
