Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have studied a multi-user virtual reality system for disaster damage examination and rescue planning using a reconstructed virtual model of the remote disaster site. Although 'joint attention' is said to have an important role in such spatial collaboration, it is often made impossible due to occlusion between a participant and the object of interest. One's object of interest may be covered by another object or even out of view from another participant's viewpoint thereby disturbing joint attention. In this article, we first discuss this occlusion problem and propose a number of visualization techniques to alleviate the problem and facilitate mutual understanding among participants. Implementation of the prototype system is also described as well as discussion and future directions.
