Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study aims to describe the communicative competence (= the ability to make an intelligible utterance) of Japanese learners of English. We analysed on the correlation between vocabulary usage and the intelligibility of utterances by investigating to what extent lexical errors interfere with the intelligibility of utterances and how it changes across different proficiency levels. We did this based on the error-coded learner corpus in which each sentence is labelled with its levels of intelligibility. We subcategorized lexical errors into some groups by estimating the causes of errors to see to what extent different types of errors interfere the intelligibility of utterances and the proportion of them varies across learners' different proficiency levels.
