Abstract(in English) | In recent years, wider bandwidth of access networks has been advancing at a rapid rate, and increase of power consumption is becoming a major problem. In general, the higher-rate link consumes more electrical power than the lower-rate link. Therefore, communication equipment with adaptive link-rate function consumes lower amounts of electrical power. The adaptive link-rate function includes monitoring mechanism of traffic fluctuation, and transition mechanism between the higher-rate link and the lower-rate link. In addition, sleeping function is also useful for power saving of terminal equipment under burst traffic. The sleeping function includes monitoring mechanism of traffic fluctuation, and transition mechanism between the normal mode and the sleep mode. However, these functions are mainly considered as power saving functions in point-to-point links, and power saving of PON (Passive Optical Network), which is a kind of optical networks providing point-to-multipoint links, has not been studied sufficiently. This report proposes energy efficient 10G-PON (10 Gigabit-class PON) with the adaptive link-rate function and the sleeping function. Moreover, results of the performance analysis are shown to confirm the validity of the proposed 10G-PON system. |
