WWW Cache Replacement Policy Based on the Passive Measurement of Server Load

Abstract(in English) The World Wide Web (WWW) is an important service provided by the Internet. A problem of the WWW service is the response time increase caused by excessive server or network load. This problem is often effectively solved by placing proxy cache servers in the network. The cache space of a proxy server is limited. Therefore, some page objects stored in the cache space must be appropriately replaced with the newly arrived objects. In this process, the policy of object replacement affects the response time obtained by the proxy server. Unfortunately, existing replacement policies, based on the access frequency or object size, are not optimal to minimize the response time. This paper proposes a cache replacement policy based on the WWW server load, which is estimated through passive measurement. The passive measurement method of server load is also presented and evaluated. With the proposed method, the objects from the degraded server are more likely to be cached. This implies that the proposed method achieves smaller response time than existing methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through computer simulation.
