Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we show how ontology can be utilized to support distant communication. Although augmented with audio, video functions and screen sharing facilities, the users of real-time communication tools are facing difficulties due to the inability of the tools to provide appropriate meaning of keywords or conversation topics. Our system solves this problem by supporting the knowledge of keywords related to a specific subject. We present an extended approach that uses different domain ontologies to carry out mapping by agents. These ontologies store the knowledge of different types of computer operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, or Macintosh and their related word processing applications. The XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) is used for agent message transport and instant messaging (IM). Assisting a teacher as an intelligent tutoring system is the example application. It describes a sample scenario of computer usage operations in an English composition class that shows how the semantic gap between teachers and students can be filled using ontologies.
