A Smart Spectrum Sensor for Cognitive Radio Systems

Abstract(in English) This paper describes the functionalities and interfaces of a Smart Spectrum Sensor (S^3) device which comprises a spectrum sensor and a Sensing Information Processor (SIP) unit. The S^3 sensor supports both single-sensor operation mode and multi-sensor operation mode. In single-sensor mode it can receive control messages from the sensing controller, and can perform some local decisions for instance the existence of primary user or the order of delivering sensing information to different clients based on client's priority. It also can convert information obtained from sensing device to a defined structure. In multi-sensor mode, the S^3 sensor also can exchange control messages and sensing information with neighboring S^3 sensors to perform cooperative sensing activities. This S^3 sensor can be deployed on cognitive radio terminal or cognitive base station to perform spectrum sensing activities, or can be used to deploy a spectrum sensor network to provide spectrum related sensing information to it clients in order to improve the sensing quality and therefore improve the efficiency of spectrum utilization.
