Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Cicadas confuse optical drop cables with stems of dead tree and insert their eggs into optical drop cables. This can cause optical fiber breakages since cicada ovipositor is very hard and can penetrate an optical drop cable sheathed with conventional flame retardant polyolefin. The same damage also happens in PVC outside plant cables. We have performed the cicada laying eggs experiment on cables sheathed with low friction and high abrasion resistant material which has more harder and higher strength properties, and then confirmed that these cables have good results in the cicada laying eggs experiment.
