Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose a mathematical metric of the amount of musical noise generated in spectral subtraction. Spectral subtraction often generates a harmful artificial distortion so called musical noise, and sound quality deterioration due to the musical noise is one of the most serious problem on spectral subtraction. Although many methods have been studied to reduce the musical noise, we could not quantitatively evaluate the methods' efficacies because of lack of musical-noise metric. To address the problem, first, we find that degree of musical noise generation is related to unprocessed signal's probability density function (p.d.f.) and the strength of spectral subtraction process. From this relation, we propose a metric of the amount of the generated musical noise based on higher-order statistics, considering p.d.f.'s shape. Finally we show a high correlation between the proposed metric and musical noise by subjective evaluation.
