Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Sigurdsson (2003), extending Chomsky's (2001) uniformity principle, suggests that all languages share exactly the same formal features and some features are simply not pronounced. In this paper, I will provide further evidence that languages are in fact equipped with the same formal features, and argue that the phonological variation in whether the (meaningful) formal features are audibly/visibly expressed or remain silent depends on whether the features are inherited by T from C and how they compute with respect to the EPP on T. I assume, following Alexiadou and Anagnostopoulou (2007), that EPP is a condition on T or a feature on T, which can be satisfied by various phonological materials such as subject, topic, and focus elements.
