Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We longitudinally investigated the effects of development and activities in non-native language (English) on the ERPs in the first- and second-year preschool native speakers of Japanese children during listening to semantically congruent and incongruent Japanese sentences. The N400s were observed in both age groups, but their latencies and scalp distributions were different between the younger children and the older children. The meaning-related late positive components (LPCs) were observed only in the older children. The differences came from the frequency of English activities in the preschools were observed in the distribution of the N400 for the younger children and in the latency of it for the older children. The LPCs were not observed for the children who were spending most of the day using English in the preschool. These results suggest that the time course and the scalp distribution for the semantic processing of native-language sentences in preschoolers alter depending on the development and the exposure to non-native language.
