Abstract(in English) | The authors have already proposed a handover support method that enables a mobile terminal to select an appropriate access system out of the several that are available. It also reduces the power consumption of the terminal in the next generation network where heterogeneous access systems converge. In the method, a Service Area Map Server (SAMS) is introduced into the network. The SAMS gathers service area information of the respective access systems with the assistance of mobile terminals, and informs the mobile terminal of the list of available access systems based on the location of the mobile terminal using the stored service area information. In this paper, the authors propose a more effective service area map creation scheme. The loads imposed on both the mobile terminal and the SAMS can be further alleviated and a map can be created efficiently by gathering information from a limited number of selected mobile terminals based on radio quality and location. The authors implement the handover scheme on a PC and evaluate basic performance. The experimental results show that the proposed handover scheme enables the terminal to perform a WLAN search efficiently making use of the information from the SAMS even though there are a few handover failures. In addition, from the analytical consideration, it is shown that the proposed scheme enables the terminal to discover available access systems at a fraction of the power consumption compared with the basic system search scheme where each network I/F periodically activates and scans the air. |
