Abstract(in English) We develop a modified semivectorial finite-difference beam-propagation method (BPM) retaining the effect of the longitudinal field component. The power is evaluated using the Poynting vector. The improvement in terms of accuracy and power conservation is demonstrated through the analysis of strongly guiding tapered waveguides. Some numerical results obtained with the finite-difference time-domain method are also presented to clarify the motivation of revisiting the BPM formulation. After demonstrating the validity of the present method, we treat tapered rib waveguides in order to confirm the effectiveness of the present method.
