Fundamental experiment of optically feeding phased array antenna for satellite communication using optical switch

Abstract(in English) Onboard antennas are being enlarged as satellites are being enlarged. The weight of the feedline that sends the signal to a large antenna is also increased for the large-scale satellites. We solved the weight problem by replacing the feedline to the optical fiber that was mounted from the satellite body to the antenna. An optical beamforming technique based on radio-on-fiber (ROF) technology was also used. We then conducted a fundamental experiment on the optically feeding phased array antenna where the antenna beam was formed in an optical region for the purpose of satellite mounting. Throughout beamforming experiment for transmitting antenna and the fundamental experiment for the receiving antenna, validity of this antenna was confirmed for Ka band satellite communication.
