Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents an information-entropy-based approach for evaluating overall image quality in medical imaging systems. This approach utilizes the transmitted information (TI) concept as the image quality criterion. In this study, computer-simulated images of step wedges were generated to examine the effects of these physical properties on the TI. Acrylic step wedges were also used as input objects in practical applications. Our results have shown that TI value increased with the increase of image contrast and with the decrease of image noise. Also, the TI value decreased with the increase of blur. In conclusion, the amount of TI was closely correlated with image contrast, noise and spatial resolution. Our results demonstrated the potential usefulness of the proposed method for overall evaluation of physical quality of the images obtained from medical imaging systems.
