Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Suppression of bacterial growth by hinokitiol (β-Thujaplicin) was investigated using several bacteria. A small amount of hinokitiol (less than 20ug/ml=20ppm) inhibited a growth of E.coli O111 and other employed bacteria in the optimal growth condition remarkably. Under these experimental conditions, the effect of a heat treatment (60 or 80 C 10min) or an existence of serum protein against the antibacterial growth activity of hinokitiol were examined. From these experiments, a heat treatment did not affect the antibacterial effect of hinokitiol. Furthemore an existence of serum protein could not show inactivating activity against Hinokitiol. In contrast, Staphylococcus aureus which inhabiting on normal skin showed weekly resistance against hinokitiol. In this report, the author indicated a new possibility for utilization of hinokitiol that may be confirmed in extension of bactericidal or bacteristatic activity due to hinokitiol assistance.
