Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Media broadcasting services using Internet Protocol (IP) multicast are emerging. On the other hand, IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) has been widely deployed. Because of such a background, the opportunities to receive multicast streaming over WLAN are expected to be more often. However, due to the restrictions on the standard, the transmission rate and the reliability of multicast over WLAN are both lower than those of unicast. In this paper, we proposed a transparent multicast / unicast translation method which translates a multicast packet to multiple unicast packets so that we can utilize the higher transmission rates and retransmission function that are only available for unicast. Our theoretical analysis showed that the proposed method improves the efficiency and reliability of multicast over WLAN if the number of receivers is limited to a number which an access point is assumed to reasonably support.
