Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper outlines fundamental ideas for design of directional couplers and 3-dB hybrids widely used in various microwave and millimeter-wave systems as a key device for dividing or combining signals. First, general properties of a lossless reciprocal four-port circuit, and some basic characteristics and the circuit-theoretical treatment for the symmetric one are described. Next, based upon the above knowledge, some constitution principles to realize a directional coupler using transmission lines and waveguides are explained in order to give basic ideas for the design.
