Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A lossless compression system for digital images is proposed to equip itself with two functions of progressive transmission and progressive decoding. It is a bitplane coding system and consists of context modeling and adaptive arithmetic coding (actually range coding). Starting from the most significant bitplane, every bitplane is encoded into a separate bit stream to implement progressive transmission. Sequential encoding of bitplanes enables progressive decoding. The context of a target bit is made of two composites. The neigborhood context is modeled by the expectation values of the neighboring pixel values that are available at decoders. The other is the self context that is the MSB of the decode expectation value for the target pixel. The lossless compression performance of the bitplane codec is competitive with that of JPEG-LS. There is no spatial blur even at the earliest level of progressive decoding. The mean square error between the original image and a decoded image at any progression level is known prior to encoding/decoding.
