Image Quality Control and Its Automatic Adjustment for ROI images in JPEG2000

Abstract(in English) JPEG2000 still image coding standard has a feature called Region of Interest (ROI) coding which is based on the Max-shift method. This feature can encode a restricted region in an image prior to its background (BG) region. However, it is difficult for the ROI coding based on the Max-shift method to achieve relative image quality control between ROI and BG region because the ROI region is automatically treated as maximum quality. To solve this problem and achieve relative and fine image quality control between ROI and BG region, we propose a method modifying ROI masks which identify pixels belonging to the ROI region in each sub-band. Furthermore, by using contribution for the whole image derived from DWT coefficients obtained in JPEG 2000 encoder, we implement a method which automatically adjusts the image quality of ROI regions in ROI images to some desired quality levels. The standard decoder of JPEG 2000 part 1 can decode this encoded data.
