Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Packet contention occurs at a switching node in optical packet switching networks. By using fibre delay line (FDL) buffers, packet contention can be avoided. In case of synchronous networks, if the length of FDLs is properly selected according to the fixed length of packets, no waste of FDL use will occur. FDL will be used efficiently to avoid packet contention. However, if the current Internet packets which have variable lengths are fragmented and embedded into the fixed length optical packet of synchronous networks, it is considered inefficient due to the waste within the last optical packet where the last fragmented payload is always shorter than the fixed optical packet size. This will degrade the performance. In this paper, through simulations, we quantitatively evaluate the performance between fixed length packets and variable length packets in optical packet switching. Our motivation in this paper is to observe the possible clues to improve the FDLs efficiency and system performance in both asynchronous and synchronous optical packet switching networks. |
