Abstract(in English) | It is necessary to select an appropriate access network out of the several available when a multi-mode terminal is used. It is also important to perform switchover of the access system, i.e. a vertical handover, according to location. For example, we have a dual-mode terminal which can connect to both wireless LAN (WLAN) and cellular networks, featuring a high transmission rate and wide coverage area, respectively. Using such a terminal, we can enjoy WLAN indoors and cellular outdoors; maintaining a session to perform the vertical handover. Before selecting and switching access networks however, it is necessary to detect the coverage area of the access networks to be connected, for which a reduction in power consumption is required in view of the battery-powered mobile terminal. In addition, it is desirable to avoid changes to existing networks because this would have a significant cost impact on many networks that have already been deployed. In this paper, the authors propose a terminal-driven coverage area detection method with low power consumption. The method deduces a movement from an outdoor cellular coverage area into an indoor space, where the WLAN coverage area mainly exists by monitoring the transition of the signal quality of a cellular system. Furthermore, the authors also introduce the method of ascertaining the deduction by leveraging the GPS signal. |
