Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recognizing object function is a very important aspect of object recognition tasks as well as recognizing object visually. The authors have proposed "object concept model" for object recognition/understanding in the past especially for common tools. The model represents the relationship between visual features and object function, and the system can learn such relationship statistically by observing a human tool use through a camera. Although tools usage is the substance for object understanding, the model does not contain such information. Therefore a model of tools usage is studied in this paper in order to extend the object concept model. The model is constructed from observations of hand shape, grasping parts and contact points of the tool. It seems that the model makes it possible for robots to use tools practically. Since the proposed model is based on graphical model, it is possible for the system to infer unobservable information using observed one stochastically. Hence the system can infer the usage of the tool visually through the proposed usage model. The model is implemented on a system with camera so that the proposed model can be evaluated.
