Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Bats possess highly-developed bio-sonar system established in order to overcome natural selection and adapt themselves to their own habitat. In this study, we examined directional patterns of echolocation pulses of FM bats (Miniopterus fuliginousus) during U-turn flight in the laboratory, recorded with microphone array system. Simultaneously, we measured echolocation behavior of the flying bat using onboard telemetry sound recording. The results showed that the flying bats scan the targets by changing emitted direction of echolocation pulses with broad beam width, preceding the transition of flight direction. In addition, we derived signs of temporal and spatial control mechanism between flight and echolocation. These findings provide important information about acoustic sensing technique by echolocating bats.
