Study on Rayleigh scattering loss in photonic crystal fiber

Abstract(in English) It has been reported that additional scattering loss often arises in PCFs due to the surface roughness of their air holes. This extrinsic loss tends to increase in proportion to wavelength^<-4>. As a result, we cannot distinguish intrinsic Rayleigh scattering from other scattering accurately when we measure the optical loss spectra of PCFs. Then, we investigate the scattering loss in PCFs with different structures by using bi-directional OTDR measurement. Their intrinsic Rayleigh scattering coefficient is slightly less than that of conventional pure silica core single-mode fiber.
