Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A survey was conducted on the use of personal computers, assistive tools, and application software among people with visual impairments. Among 413 effective respondents, 391 people were using personal computers. Among 391PC users, screen readers were used by 330 people, screen magnifier software by 15 people, and Accessibility Features in the operating system by 59 people. More than half of those who answered that they were print enabled were using screen readers. The usage rate of electronic braille notetakers has risen compared to the previous survey results in 2002. Problems such as imperfect speech output, frequent freeze-ups of screen readers, application software, and the operating system, and lack of readability were raised by many respondents.
