Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Novel 1x2 and 2x2 photonic switches based on the multimode interference (MMI) effect are proposed. It is assumed that these switches use III/V compound semiconductor material and contain parallel electrodes in an MMI waveguide, which cause a refractive index change, Δn, when current is injected into them. The device structures are analyzed and optimized by the wide-angle finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM). As a result, the analyses show that the 1x2 MMI switch can achieve very low crosstalk of-54.7 dB when Δn = -0.03. Similarly, the 2x2 MMI switch can achieve very low crosstalk of-52.9 dB for the cross state and -43.8 dB for the bar state when Δn = -0.03.
