Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The previous study examined the role that cultural identity plays in mind reading, using the "Reading the mind in the eyes" test(Baron-Cohen et al., 2002) and its Asian version, which we developed. The results reveal an intracultural advantage in mind reading across native Japanese and U.S. Caucasian participants when both the four-alternative and open-ended response formats were used. The present study adopted a sequential matching task to examine whether this cultural difference in mind reading would emerge at an early stage of face processing. The results showed that the response times for a "matched" response were faster for in-group eye stimuli than for out-group eye stimuli, although this difference in response times ceased when the trials were repeated. These results demonstrate the influence of cultural identity on mind reading and its plasticity.
