Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Nursing elderly people without caring persons has been drawing much attention for the forthcoming aged society in Japan. For monitoring elderly people in doors, a video camera system is useful because it can observe various kinds of their physical motions; the changes in the motions might be caused by deterioration in health. In our system, a pair of cameras are rotated in order to observe a moving person. While it enables wide-area monitoring of the freely moving person, it results in difficulty in 1) detecting the person in a variety of background images and 2) recognizing the behavior of the person independently of viewing orientation. To solve these two problems, we propose 1) silhouette extraction, which employs color segmentation and disparity, robust to the changes in background images and 2) behavior recognition, which uses DP matching with multi-viewpoint silhouettes generated from a training 3D volume data, applicable to the extracted silhouette observed from an arbitrary viewing orientation. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of our method in several real situations.
