Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Screen readers for blind persons are equipped with phonetic alphabet. It is a set of English words which begin with each of 26 alphabet letters and used to make it easier to distinguish a spoken alphabet letter from others. Many screen reader products are adopting NATO phonetic alphabet. However, some words in it are not familiar to Japanese people and some contain pairs of consonants (b and v, and r and l) which Japanese often mistake for each other. Given junior high school students use screen readers, their vocabulary should be considered as well. Thus, we conducted an English words listening test to investigate junior high school students' familiarity with and spelling correctness of both NATO phonetic alphabet and candidate words selected from English textbooks.
