Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Changing the refractive index locally is a very important technique for fabricating optical devices and modifying their optical properties. The glass structure change is a simple and widely applicable technique to modify the refractive index, and has been utilized to fabricate fiber-based devices, including short-wavelength rejection filters, mode-field transformers, long-period gratings in conventional silica fibers and a pure silica photonic crystal fiber, and wavelength-insensitive fiber cou- plers, etc., and to adjust their optical properties and the index difference of dispersive fibers. This paper reviews the progress of the glass structure change technique, and it is demonstrated that the glass structure change is a powerful and versatile technique for fabrication of optical devices and modification of their optical properties.
