Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Communications protocols with directional antennas or beam-steerable antennas are promising technologies for the effective communication of ubiquitous networks with many transmitters. In this paper, we address some inherent problems of directional antenna based protocols; acquisition of locations of other nodes, directional hidden terminal problem, and deafness. Then, this paper describes some solutions for the problems in the medium access control (MAC) layer, and the routing layer. More specifically, we mention SWAMP, BRTS, HCTS, RCTS, Orthogonal routing, and UNAGI/ESPAR. SWAMP is one of MAC protocols which solve the location problem within the MAC layer. BRT, HCT, and RCT solve directional hidden terminal problems in the MAC layer, while Orthogonal routing does in the routing layer. We develop UNAGI/ESPAR testbed for ad hoc networks with smart antennas. It incorporates a practical smart antenna, ESPAR as well as GPS, and gyros. Some experiments results are also shown.
