Abstract(in English) | Recently, the importance of software license compliance increases, while its management cost is usually kept low. In universities it is often the case that software is installed by someone who is different from a PC administrator, a person responsible to the legal usage of the software. In particular, while download installation is getting more common due to its low management cost, it is difficult to prevent illegal software installation or creating illegal copies for download installations. In this paper, we report an on-line software distribution mechanism developed and being used in Tokyo Tech; we explain its requirements, design, implementation, and operation results, and we discuss some technical features of our system. We employed our campus-wide authentication and authorization system to prevent noncompliant software distribution as well as to reduce the management cost. We introduced a method for separating two different roles, i.e., a PC administrator and an actual installer, and a way to transfer a legal right from the administrator to the installer. We also introduced the notion of online installation, which has been designed for preventing illegal usage of the distributed software download archive. |
