New optical splitter module with high reliability for PON in outside environment

Abstract(in English) This paper describes new optical splitter modules designed and developed for PON (Passive Optical network). To reduce the time required for optical splitter installation in optical aerial closures, we need optical splitters that are easy to handle and connect. These modules have plug and socket optical connectors, and optical fiber cords, and can reduce the time needed for their installation in optical aerial closures. We confirmed that these modules offer good optical and environmental performance in outside passive optical networks (PONs). We also show that these modules have sufficient optical and environmental performance by estimating the power budget of optical network for GE-PON systems. To reduce the maintenance cost of the optical fiber network, highly reliable optical splitters are needed. We confirm that PLC type optical splitters and optical splitter modules installed for PONs in outside environments have sufficient reliability as regards heat and moisture from about 5000-hour damp heat test results.
