Designing of Spherical Monopole Antenna for UWB

Abstract(in English) UWB (Ultra Wide Band) applications need broadband antenna which covers the authorized band from 3.1 to 10.6GHz by FCC. On the other hand, many broadband antennas have been developed historically, and one of them is spherical monopole antenna. For spherical monopole antenna, however, there have been few reports to know characteristics. This paper reports measured characteristics of spherical monopole antenna for UWB. The antenna consists of 20mm-dia sphere and 120mm-dia disk made of aluminum. It is shown first that the input impedance varies relatively in smooth for wide band and depends on distance between the sphere and the disk. Next, as that distance is adjusted, broader bandwidth of 2.8-16.5GHz with VSWR<2 including UWB is obtained. Finally, radiation pattern is presented.
