Functional Safety of Safety Related Systems with Safe Shutdown

Abstract(in English) In the IEC 61508, the overall system is modelled as that involving Equipment Under Control (EUC), EUC Control System, E/E/PE SRS, other technology safety-related system and External Risk Reduction Facility (ERRF). The EUC is an equipment, apparatus, or plant used for manufacturing, etc. The EUC control system controls the EUC in the desired manner. Both the SRS and ERRF are sub-systems that prevent hazardous events from arising even if the EUC control system fails to control. Some kinds of chemical plants and nuclear power plants are to be put into a safe-shutdown state by detecting a dangerous failure of SRS. Thus, in this paper, firstly the relationship between dangerous failures of SRS, demands and hazardous events is modelled using a Markov-transition diagram, given the EUC is put into a safe-shutdown state as soon as a dangerous failure of SRS is detected. Then, the relationship is analysed and formulated for appropriate assignment of SIL to a safety function of SRS.
