Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper reported three studies which investigated appropriateness of the human action patterns in receiving objects passed by another person. In the first study, we recorded pass-and-receive actions performed by the experimenter (passer) and the participants (receivers). As the results of analyzing the motion patterns of receiving actions, we found that the selection process of appropriate receiving actions could be well described by the following three standards, "receiving an object steadily", "receiving an object without touching the passer's hand", and "matching the passer's motion in receiving an object". In the next study, we investigated the brain activities by the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) while the participants observed the movie clips of pass-and-receive actions and evaluated the appropriateness of the receiving actions. The results indicated that the brain areas related to the mirror neuron system (e.g., the inferior frontal gyrus (BA44, 45)) were involved in the recognition of appropriate receiving actions. In the third study, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while the participants observed the pictures of passing and receiving actions and judged the appropriateness of receiving actions. The results showed that the evaluation of inappropriate receiving actions evoked the ERP components similar to N400 elicited by processing semantically incongruous stimulus. Based on the results of the three studies, we discussed the characteristics and the specificities of the processes related to the execution and the recognition of appropriate cooperative actions performed between two peoples.
