Detection of magnetic nanoparticles by measurement of ac susceptibility

Abstract(in English) AC-susceptibility of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe_3O_4) was measured by using an induction detection coil having a differential configuration and a dc-SQUID current-detector. For this purpose, a portable SQUID magnetometer that could measure small currents of orders of pA was developed. Super-paramagnetic nanoparticles (particle size 16 nm), which were coated with dextran molecules, were used. An excitation ac field was applied to magnetic nanoparticles, and the current signal detected by the induction coil was transmitted to the SQUID current-detector through an input coil. Finally, the magnetic signal of third-order higher harmonics of the excitation frequency was measured with a spectrum analyzer. As a result, the amount of nanoparticles from 120 to 1800 ng was obtained with a linear input-output relation. The detection sensitivity estimated from the noise level was 60-100 ng.
