Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Fiber optics comes into widespread use as a transmission medium providing high-speed communications. On the other hands, fiber optics also functions as a sensor monitoring physical quantities, e.g. bending strain, distortion, vibration and temperature. A hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensor has received a high evaluation especially for sensitiveness, convenience and measurement of high precision from the practical point of view. An optical sensory nerve network (OSN) with the hetero-core spliced optic sensors is a novel multifunctional network which can play dual roles : as a communications network and as a sophisticated monitoring system. In homes, offices and other buildings, the OSN not only senses environmental conditions but also performs as a high-speed local area network. This exhibit demonstrates that OSN network can provide both sensing and communication functions.
