Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The aim of this research is to build a mathematical formula to measure readability of Japanese text. The length of a sentence or a word is applied as variables for English readability formula. Six factors were set as determining factors of Japanese readability in this study based on the corpus of language school textbooks : 1) average number of characters in a sentence, 2) average number of words in a sentence, 3) average number of dependency structures in a sentence, 4) average number of idea units in a sentence, 5)ratio of word types in a text, and 6) ratio of character types in a texts. After plotting an imaginary line through school grade levels based on data obtained from these methods, a linear multiple regression analysis was performed with variables 1) through 6)as the independent variables and school grade level as the dependent variable. As the result of this analysis, variables 1) through 3) were excluded and it was possible to build a formula using variables 4) through 6) to indicate how closely a given text approached the school grade level of elementary grade one through six.
