Application of Effective Permittivity Considering Uniaxial Unisotropic Characteristics of Dielectric Substrates to Filter Designs

Abstract(in English) Dielectric laminate substrates which are commonly used in microwave plane circuits have uniaxial unisotropic characteristics because of multilayer structures : that is, the relative permittivity in the tangential direction ε_ has a different value of one in the normal direction ε_. In this paper, the measurements for a glass-cloth ceramic/PTFE substrate were performed at first by the cavity method and the parallel-plate type disk resonator method, respectively. Actually two filter designs having microstrip line (MSL) and coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures are performed by the two-dimensional simulator SONNET, using each value of the effective permittivity calculated from the measured values ε_ and ε_, respectively. Measured frequency responses for these filters agree well with the designed ones. As a result, a filter design method proposed was verified to be effective for filter designs using dielectric laminate substrates.
