Fast Selection on Picture Adaptive Frame/Field Coding

Abstract(in English) For interlaced video sequences, the video coding standard H.264/AVC has picture adaptive frame/field (PAFF) coding function and macroblock adaptive frame/field (MBAFF) coding function to achieve high compression efficiency. However, PAFF coding needs both frame and field coding, as H.264 reference software does, to achieve the best performance in the processing of mode selection and increases the computational complexity. Although a lot of methods for fast decision on PAFF coding mode using the motion activity of the picture have been proposed, they could not show the satisfactory accuracy. In this paper, we propose the fast decision on PAFF coding mode based on the spatial frequency information by the filtering process. This method can select the mode which has high accuracy. By the experimental results of the 1pass coding using mode based on the proposed method and the 2 pass PAFF coding implemented in reference software, we show that our method can improve the computational complexity and has effective performance.
