Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Using a modified gaze-cueing paradigm (Bayliss & Tipper, 2006), this study investigated whether cue-target congruency would affect preference for the cue person. After the cueing phase, pairs of cue faces were presented and undergraduate students were asked to indicate which face they preferred. The results of Experiment 1 showed that faces that looked towards the target were preferred over faces that looked away from the target. This reference was not observed when the faces looked neither towards nor away from the target before the participant's response (Exp. 2). When participants judged more intuitively (Exp. 3), however, faces that looked towards the target after the participant's response were favored over faces that looked the other way. These results indicate that the mere perception of a spatiotemporal relationship between gaze and object affected the judgment for that person, regardless of whether gaze functioned as a cue or established joint attention.
