Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study focuses upon signed words with more than one basic signing motion element. The target signed words (1, 600 signed words) are those cited in "The glossaries of the Japanese signs" published by Japanese Federation of the Deaf. We first divide each of signed words into constituent elements, and classify them. The results for classification show certain features of words : (1) Signed words are constructed by sequential and/or simultaneous combination of constituent elements. The majority of the combinations are sequential ones. (2) The majority (89.28%) of signed words have less than three constituent elements. The average number of the elements is 2.13. (3) The total number of the elements is 1, 326. The average number of the use of these elements is only 2.67.
