On Modeling Handwritten Characters for Identifying Ages of Japanese Historical Documents Based on Graph Theory

Abstract(in English) There are many Japanese historical documents whose authors and written age are unclear. To clarify these, we have to do the followings : (1) to recognize the characters from the images of the documents ; (2) to transform the Kana characters in the documents into their original Chinese characters (called Jibo) from which these Kanas have been obtained ; (3) to compute the appearance frequencies of the Kanas and compare them with those documents whose authors and written age are known. In this paper, aiming at developing a system that can identify ages, authors, etc. of Japanese historical documents, we describes conception of our system, modeling and recognizing method of handwritten characters based on graph theory.
