Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Hollow optical fibers for terahertz wave delivery are designed and fabricated. Fibers with silver inner coating work as metal hollow waveguides and experimental results show that transmission losses are 7.5-8.0dB/m at 200-μm wavelength for 1-mm diameter fibers. This measured losses coincide well with theoretical losses of TE_11 mode that was expected as a dominant mode in metal hollow fibers. A dielectric-loaded, metal hollow waveguides are fabricated by inserting a polyethylene film with silver coating into a plastic tubing. Measured losses of the dielectric-loaded fiber at 200μm are 1.3dB for 3.0-mm-bore hollow optical fibers. Bending losses are also low in dielectric loaded fibers and additional losses due to bending are around 1 dB. Although the fibers have relative large diameter of 3mm, they are flexible and the minimum bending radius is around 10cm.
