Development of Bottom skip type quasi-resonant power ICs for SMPS

Abstract(in English) SMPS with quasi-resonant switching mode has features of high power conversion efficiency and very low radio noise. Conversion efficiency of it's SMPS is reduced in proportion as to reducing of output power, because of increment of switching frequency. To improve conversion efficiency on light load, bottom skip quasi-resonant switching power IC is developed. This IC operates normal quasi-resonant switching mode on around of rated maximum output power. On light load less than about 60% of maximum rating, the IC automatically operates bottom skip quasi-resonance mode that means power MOSFET is just switched on at the only 2^ timing of the lowest voltage of V_DS after skipping over the 1^ switching on. To get stable switching mode transition between normal quasi-resonance and bottom skip quasi-resonance, this IC has hysteresis characteristics by changing reference time of switching off. Conversion efficiency of SMPS with the IC is improved by more than 3% compared with existing one on light load less than about 60% of maximum rating. The IC consists of power MOSFET chip and control IC chip. This IC has also pulse ratio switching mode and burst switching mode for obtaining very small standby electric power.
