An Overview of Wireless Mesh Networks : Topics on Comunication Quality

Abstract(in English) In wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), single-hop or multi-hop wireless links are used to connect Access Points (APs) in place of cables of conventional wireless LAN, aiming reduction in network deployment cost and time, as well as flexibility in AP placement. In the task group S of IEEE 802.11, standardization of WMN is in progress targeting to publish IEEE 802.11s specification by the year of 2008. In this lecture, an overview of current status of IEEE 802.11s specification is presented. Specifically, the basic concepts of WMN, network models, frame format, QoS control mechanisms such as EDCA and MDA, mesh discovery and link management, channel graph switch protocol, two types of path selection protocols, congestion control, and our proposal for improvement in path selection protocol are explained. In addition, the latest topics with regard to communication quality aspects of WMN are presented. Finally, implementation experiences of link-layer notification enabling link disconnection information available at the network layer and experimental results using Niigata University testbed are presented.
