Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, overlay networks have been widely studied to improve the flexibility of traditional IP networks. When overlay paths are selected based on available bandwidth, it is important to use not only the instantaneous value of available bandwidth but also its variations. Furthermore, the variations should be measured with different time-resolutions because the quality of each application is differently sensitive to the time-granularity of the variations. However, it is difficult for traditional active measurement methods to measure shorter-term traffic variations than 100 msec. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate available bandwidth and its short-term traffic variations. The variations are calculated as the distributions of the error between the measured receiving rate and the theoretical receiving rate calculated by approximating the cross traffic with fluid. Simulation results show that the proposed method can measure available bandwidths with the measuring error less than 1.5% of link capacity for CBR cross traffic and the estimate value of short-term traffic variations, with 100msec time-resolution, increase as the cross traffic becomes more bursty, in order of CBR, Poisson, TCP. Thus, the proposed method can estimate available bandwidth and its short-term traffic variations with practical accuracy.
